2023 Annual Report: Taylor’s Story

Taylor’s connection with Works Wonders® began while she was living in a group home and had the opportunity to enroll in the program. After aging out of care, at the encouragement of her Career Coach at Foster Forward, she decided to re-enroll in the program when she found herself struggling to secure a job. This decision marked a turning point in her life.

“It pretty much set me up for the rest of my life because I got my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through the program. That was something I always wanted to do, and Works Wonders® made it possible.”

For Taylor, the program not only equipped her with a CNA license but also confirmed her passion for the healthcare industry. The experience of working as a CNA reinforced her decision to pursue a career in nursing, a path she had always envisioned but never had the means to follow.

Taylor’s newfound confidence and skills led her to take on a leadership role within the program. Inspired by her own mentor at Foster Forward, she aspired to become a mentor herself. Although she was initially too young for the mentorship role, Foster Forward saw her potential and offered her the position of Works Wonders® Youth Leader.

As a Youth Leader, Taylor collaborates with the Works Wonders® team to develop and facilitate the program's curriculum. Her firsthand experience as a participant allows her to connect with new students in a transformational way. She finds joy in meeting new youth and guiding them through their own journeys, just as she was once guided.

“I love doing class and meeting new youth,” she says. “This program made me realize that I want to work with kids of all ages.” She adds,

“Having a youth leader in the classroom can really make a big impact as I can connect with participants in a unique way. I hope that having youth leaders in programs like Works Wonders® becomes a standard in the field.”

Taylor’s journey to becoming a nurse has not been without challenges. She faced significant obstacles, including financial difficulties and the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Despite these setbacks, her determination never wavered. Now back in school, Taylor is more committed than ever to achieving her nursing degree.

Reflecting on her journey, Taylor shares, “Even though my employment specialist doesn’t work there anymore, the people at Foster Forward still encourage me to chase my dreams and follow my goals. Seeing young people in the classrooms who know what they want to do with their future is very encouraging and cool to see. It encourages me to do what I want to do as well.”

Taylor’s story is a powerful testament to the impact that supportive programs and dedicated mentors can have on young lives. At Foster Forward, we are proud to play a part in empowering youth like Taylor to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
